What is your background, education, training, work experience if other than photography? How long have you been a photographer?
My name is David H. Smith and I have been a professional photographer for nearly 25 years. I discovered my interest and love for photography in high school while working on the school yearbook. To further immerse myself into photography, I began my first job at a portrait studio shooting weddings. Eventually, I received a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and moved to Chicago to assist local commercial photographers. However, my passion for landscape and commercial photography led me to move west as I worked with Marlboro in Colorado and assisted with commercial shoots for major car companies such as Cadillac and Volvo. Later, I began working for AZ Highways Magazine capturing the beauty of this great state. I continue to educate myself through local and national workshops in order to keep myself current and up-to-date on the local trends. I belong to a non-profit organization called Through Each Others Eyes, an international photographer exchange, and I am also an active member of Now I Lay me Down to Sleep. Photography has given me so much and I try to give back to the community as much as I can.

What are your goals for your business?
My main goal for the future is to incorporate my location photo sessions with a commercial studio space. By creating a private studio setting, I will be able to be more hands on and be more involved with every aspect of my business. I enjoy sharing my craft and experience with other photographers and hope to continue with my one-on-one teaching as well.

What is your specialty?
Currently my focus is on high school seniors, model portfolios and commercial work.
What has been your most successful marketing effort to date?
My most successful marketing effort has been through the partnership that I have developed with Marathon Press.

Why did you join the AzPPA? What has been the best thing you have gotten out of being a member? Or what do you look forward to the most out of being a member?
The encouragement and support I received from Wendy & Mike Newman is the reason I am a member of AZPPA today! They embody the collaborative spirit that exists among all the AZPPA photographers that I have had the pleasure of meeting. I look forward to being able meet and interact with other photographers, to share and develop new ideas together and to deepen the friendships that I have already made. By participating in educational classes, seminars and conferences that AZPPA & PPA has to offer, I feel that my photography ability has grown to a new level.
