Michael Willems Lighting Seminar - March 22 10 AM 2 PM &
March
23, 6 PM 10 PM

This intensive four hour workshop covers a wide range of subjects, and will teach you to finally fully take advantage of small flashes!

Why this course?
While as a pro or advanced amateur you are indeed great with the camera, you are less familiar with the incredible benefits of modern flash systems and with new camera techniques that have been developed for them. Advanced TTL and multi-flash techniques; the camera’s custom settings; the range of available modifiers; even the best way to care for your batteries: until now, there has been little training aimed at pros like you. A beginner’s course is out of the question, since you already know what aperture and ISO mean. This workshop is the solution: in one session, Michael Willems helps you learn all the ins and outs of your camera flash system and the essential accessories, as well as the essential modern techniques.

I. Flash fundamentals:
1 Why and when to use Flash
2 Types of flash light
3 Four Technical need-to-knows

II. Technical:
4 TTL versus Manual: what to use when?
5 Canon e-TTL II versus Nikon i-TTL
6 Five Flash Problems - and solutions

III Using a single flash:
7 Must-Know technologies: Slow Flash, FEC and FEL
8 The Cardinal Rule for lighting people
9 Eureka: Balancing ambient and flash
10 Four Gotchas, and solutions

IV. Using Multiple Flash:
11 Nikon i-TTL and CLS; Canon E-TTL II
12 Pocketwizards - and other ways to fire your lights.
13 Small Strobe Modifiers: the Honl modifier system, Lumiquest accessories, the Gary Fong Lightsphere; and more
14 Three ways to use gels: for effect, for correction, and for subtlety.
15 Background Gels: When and What?

V. The Real World:
15 Batteries, Advanced Camera Tips
16 What is in a full pro Flash outfit?
17 Putting It All Together: practice!

Rex, thank you very much again for spending the time with me last Tuesday to visit and photograph the upper ruins. The nesting bird at the upper ruins, which I thought was a wren, is indeed a rock wren. Dave Cox

AZPPA Monthly Meeting May 3, 2010

6PM - 6:45 Speed Mentoring, Networking and New Member Orientation

7PM Dennis Nesbit will be a guest judge...

It's 8x10 Print Competition time. The Semiannual 8x10 Print Critique is open to anyone! AzPPA members can enter for free, $20 entry fee for non-members

Entries accepted from 6:00pm to 6:45pm the evening of the print competition
We will have an expert panel of judges that will critique your images. This is a
great way to select your images for the regional Print competition, AZPPA State competiton and the 2009 International PPA Print Competition.

1. The main purpose is to help our members select their best images and give guidance on preparing a print case to enter at our annual state print competition, a PPA Regional, or PPA National Print Competition.
2. To help members improve their photography and Photoshop skills.
3. To earn merits for the Distinguished Photographer’s Award.

Qualifications For Print Entry
1. Members of the Arizona Professional Photographers Association may enter the print critique for free. A $20 entry fee is required for non-members.
2. Members must be present at the meeting at which they enter prints and prints must be entered by deadline time. Entries are accepted from 6:00pm until 6:45pm on the day of the meeting.

Print Rules
1. Only 8x10 photographs or any sized albums may be entered. No other print size is allowed. Prints do not need to be mounted or sprayed. (This rule is drastically different to PPA's and AzPPA's Annual Print Competition rules. At the Print Critique, our main goal is to encourage photographers to enter competition and receive the valuable learning experience that is gained by competing. Before entering a print into State or National level competitions, be sure the print meets their requirements).
2. The prints brought for judging must be marked with the category to which they belong. All prints may be entered in the same category.
a. Portrait
b. Commercial/Industrial (Tear sheets may be included to assist judges)
c. Illustrative
d. Wedding Photograph
e. Wedding Album (Social Events) - Any size album accepted
3a. A digital jpeg file of the image must be submitted along with any photograph entered. It must be sized to 800 by 1000 pixels. If you have an 8x10 file, an easy way to do this in Photoshop is to go to File>Automate>Fit Image and enter 1000 for both height and width. Please use this format to title your file - Last Name_Title-Of_Print. (For example: Cheswick_Simple_Elegance.jpg)
3b. A digital jpeg file of each page of the album (including the cover) must be submitted with each album entered. Please put all images in a folder and number the images in a consecutive order. Please use this format to title the folder - Last Name_Title_Of_Album. (For example: Cheswick_Sara_and_John)
4. The maximum number of prints/albums that a member can enter at each meeting is four (4) for judging. Digital jpeg files must be submitted of the entire album following the sizing requirements in #3. Number the files in sequential order.
5. All Photographs must be titled. "No title" or "untitled" is not an acceptable title. Albums are not titled.
6. A subject may be entered more than once at the Print Critique. For example, if you photograph a family, you can enter any member in that family in another print. Also, a photograph that was contained in wedding album may be entered in the wedding photograph category. This is drastically different from the State, Regional and National print competition rules. Our goal is to help you select the strongest of your images to enter at State, Regional and National.
6. Prints and Albums will be judged on a thumbs up/down method and will need a majority of thumbs up to receive a merit towards the Distinguished Photographer’s Award.
3 judges will require 2 thumbs up.
4 judges will require 3 thumbs up.
5 judges will require 3 thumbs up.
7. Distinguished Photographer’s Award is an award that was created by the Phoenix Professional Photographers Association. If you renewed your AzPPA membership, by April 30, 2006, your local PPPA print merits have been transferred. If you did not renew by April 30, 2006, any past merits from PPPA were forfeited.
8. You must receive 25 “Print Critique Print Merits” to earn the Distinguished Photographer’s Award.
9. Judges will be Master Photographers, or have received the APPLE Award from the AzPPA or have completed the national judging class. In the event that a judge doesn't meet either of the three requirements, they will only be used upon the approval of the Print Critique Chairperson and Jury Foreman. Judges will not score prints in which they know the maker of the image if they feel that it may affect their judgment. Judges may not score, challenge or make comments about their own images, a spouse's image or images made by someone that works for the same studio.
10. Prints/Albums may only be entered once. Even if you make changes to a print/album, it still may not be entered again in our Print Critique. You are encouraged to send the new print/album to State, Regional and National competitions.
11. The AzPPA Print Critique Chairperson along with the Jury Foreman have the full authority to decide any questions not specifically covered by these rules. They may also disqualify entries and remove members from the print competition room, if any member acts in an unprofessional manner during or after the print competition. Their decision will be final.
The primary purpose of this competition is to learn and improve. Please participate!
*This update (3/7/2007) supersedes all former print rules and updates.

First meeting is free. Non-members $25. Held at the Fiesta Resort Conference Center 2100 S Priest Drive Tempe, AZ 85282 Tel: (480) 967-1441 Download Directions

Arthur Levi Rainville, M.Photog., Cr, CPP, API,

The FIVE ATELIERS an Artistic Journey through Creative Expressionism

If you are searching for new answers for your photography, your business or your personal soul – you need to spend special time with Alchemist Arthur Levi Rainville

Arthur offers a whirlwind tour of Art and Heart, inspiration and emotion.  His poignant stories and private encouragements will set the stage for renewed self-exploration.  Drawing from his poetic, evocative Mansuesco style, he will lead us through inventive creative photographic sessions that will set the tone by adhering to a simple credo: “an artist’s job is to deepen the mystery.”   We will take an active role in images via Arthur’s fabled masterpieces called “Allegory.”  These Gestalt inspired classics, steeped in romantic overtones, will serve as a muse for our visual imagery.  His unique ‘photo-paint’ method of Gathering evocative elements together in an image is reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the Symbolist period.

Arthur will offer his Five Ateliers (artist’s studios) as a way to breakdown and attune to the elements of making more beautiful and meaningful portraiture.

The First Atelier will reveal Technique
from a reinterpretation of Caravaggio’s Chiaroscuro to cutting-edge
digital intrigues.  Techniques revealed will encompass the Vaporoso scene
layering of Italian Renaissance, Twilight via the latest LED light technology,
and melancholic poses from two centuries of classic art.

The Second Atelier will explore Aesthetic
from creating the lost profundity of Vermeer to
reinterpreting fine art for today’s savvy consumers.

The Third Atelier will make it Personal
discovering a private inner force to create
            deeper imagery through hidden strengths.

The Fourth Atelier will touch Spiritual
understanding the power of outside forces on one’s work.

The Fifth Atelier will tie it all together through Alchemy
Alchemy was known as the spagyric art after the Greek word
meaning to separate and to join together.
We will celebrate a Visual Journey and marry it with a
new mysticism for an exciting visual signature style.

This reawakening visionary will offer an artistic fusion of ideas designed to guide imagery to a heightened sense of wonder....mixed media anyone?

And yes......NO STARVING ARTISTS ! Arthur will share innovative ideas and techniques to drive the savvy consumers of today to us for the latest and greatest.  As new-age Heartists, we will embark on a journey to take a tender look into a world of “HeartStories.” Arthur will share how we can translate ‘the love’ into genuine income in these challenging times.  Believing that in this high tech world, we silently all crave High Touch, Arthur will lead us on a natural journey of sensitive portrayals perfect for brides and grooms, families, ‘matures’ and all ‘women of affection.’

Arthur will play with our mind, tug at our heart and return us to our world changed forever.  If you need to add new energy to your photography and income to your business, not to mention a little sigh to your life - this is the time, this is the place for you.

Arthur's Bio

Arthur has been creating stunning photographs, wrapped in intrigue, atmosphere and romanticism, for over 50 years. With his life’s work being lovingly displayed on three continents; he has been touted as, “the Poet Lauréate of Photography, one of the most sensitive, artists of our time.”

Working out of his decorous studio in the historic waterfront district of New Bedford, Massachusetts, he is widely known for his muted, granular color work.  Refinements of this life’s passion lead to his lyrical, quixotic Mansuesco style of today.  Defying a definable formula, Mansuesco, much like Impressionism, is a plurality of looks.  An innate quality of light coupled with a compositional choreography is akin to his signature style.  In a one-man show at the French Cultural Center, his work was astutely referred to as “... a synthesis of observation and imagination blended with a palette of gauzy colors.”

Arthur has taught portraiture professionally for 30 years, inspiring the budding or seasoned photographer to look to Art and Heart as they face the blank canvas.  Besides being a noted touring lecturer, he is a prolific author with four published books on the Creative Spirit and living an Artful Life.  As our industry’s resident ‘Sage,’ Arthur continues to spread the word that personal style matters.

Now Executive Director of the New England Institute of Professional Photography, his life-long commitment to photographic education is focused on building a contemporary 21st century professional development experience.

His time is devoted and divided between private portrait commissions, photographic consultancy and teachings and his experiential fine art studies and gallery work.

Scott Hargis Architechtural Lighting Workshop August 1, 2010

Workshops are taught in staged, new construction “model” homes that present the typical challenges confronting a residential interiors photographer in the field. Throughout the 9-hour day, Scott demonstrates techniques and coaches students as they shoot multiple rooms under real-life conditions. Time is taken to review results, and all participants have the opportunity to guide the curriculum in the direction that suits their specific needs.
InteriorPhotoWorkshops.com

8:00 – 9:00 Arrival, Unpacking Gear, Introductions, Organization, Coffee

9:00 – 9:30 Boring lecture begins (theory, light, camera settings, etc.) Make sure you have coffee.

9:30 – 10:30 Boring lecture is over! Scott demonstrates a shot. We’ll take it
step by step, reviewing photos as they are made (I’ll be shooting tethered), and discussing each step of the process to the final image.

10:30 – 12:30 We divide into 2 groups. One group will spend the morning upstairs working on bedrooms/bathrooms, and the other will work on complex multi-room setups downstairs.

12:30 – 1:30 LUNCH!

1:30 – 2:00 Debrief from the morning, and Q & A session

2:00 – 4:00 Back to shooting; if you were upstairs in the morning, you’ll spend the afternoon downstairs(and vice versa.)

4:00 – 5:00 Scott demonstrates another (more complex) shot. By now
you’ll really understand what’s happening!

5:00 – 6:00ish Wrap-up, Q&A, discussion. Especially, we’ll discuss where
the nearest pub is.

Scott Hargis - Architechtural Photography Lighting Program

Scott Hargis – 'Introduction' to architechtual interiors photography will include lighting diagrams, How-to set-up shots, and finished examples of completed projects. There will be a good amount of Q&A. If you think learning about lighting interiors may not be your "cup of tea" because you are a portrait or wedding photographer, think about where you perform a lot of your photography. Scott's program is definately worth a look.

KUDOS for Kay's Speaking:

Sent: Thursday, May 21, 2009 5:12 PM
To: Kay Eskridge
Subject: RE: testimonial

Kay, just wanted to let you know that your Maternity Marketing webinar paid for itself and them some in less than 48 hours. How often does that happen?? Your ideas and maternity session structure were implemented with mine immediately. So, the next day when I had a design consultation, I was ready to go, and the new client is going with the
deluxe sessions, which is four times more than what I would have offered prior to your webinar.

Thank you so much, Kay, for sharing a wealth of information. In addition to your willingness to share valuable working information, your warmth, inviting personality and professionalism shine through.

I was so impressed with the information provided during the webinar that I also invested in the B.R.A.G. kit, and I look forward to receiving it any day. - Sincerely, Jennifer Okamoto Mililani, HI

WOW! Just spectacular!
Probably going to be my most favorite speaker of all! LOVE her.
Fantastic...one of the best presentations! Kay presented so many ideas with
such confidence and kept the audience involved throughout.
Great material and outstanding presentation. I walked away with tons of ideas. I
was disappointed that this conflicted with boutique seminar though -- when the
7am choices were so lousy.
best speaker of whole conference
Kay is the most dynamic speaker I have seen!!
Made me laugh and cry. Kay was down to earth and made me feel like I was
part of the family. The subject matter was blunt and to the point the way it
should be. Get her back next year.
Excellent, very knowledgeable and would love to see more of her!
She was awesome. The awesomest. Please bring her back over and over?

KUDOS for JT's speaking abilities

Here are some responses from my JT's presentations. The subject of his presentation next year will be different, but I’m sure it’ll be very educational for the organization. Cheers! JT

From Pictage PartnerCon
:

I recently attended your session at the Chicago Partner Con - loved it!! You were one of the best speakers that I heard during those two days. The presentation was very informative and down to earth. Thanks!! - Joy Jensen

Hey man, it was great to meet you at Partnercon last weekend. Your session challenged me the most out of anyones even though it was stuff I'd already been thinking about, it reminded me of some new things and motivated me to get my act together. I appreciate your willingness to share your ideas to help other photographers out. –Jonathan Thrasher

hey jt - i was in chicago last week and loved what you had to say. I got more out your "class" than any of the others. – Julie Morris

I wanted to say thank you for your excellent presentation at PartnerCon in Chicago this past week. It was a pleasure listening to you speak and I not only learned a lot, but I got a lot of ideas from yourself and the other speakers. – Steve Rosenberg

I was impressed like crazy over your contracts and other paper communications for the client. I was inspired to see how you make it personal for the client. I really feel the client will feel ownership. Thank you I really got alot out of your talk. –Lisa Schaller

Thanks for your session and all of your great info in Chicago. I've been doing this for 20 years and feeling a bit stagnate lately, you really helped me see a new way of marketing myself and reaching the type of bride I want to work with. I was very impressed with your attitude and how you jazzed up your presentation materials.
– Scott Patrick

Other Presentations:

JT, Your presentation was amazing. I could have listened to you talk a lot longer and really get into how you create a unique experience for your clients. I especially love the thing about getting the couples to meet before the ceremony and insisting on the make up artist for the bride and bridesmaids. I've also created different signatures for email communications and plan to get a newsletter going in the next couple weeks. I have a ton of untapped potential clients that I need to reach out to and you gave us a really simple approach on how to do that. Can't wait! Thank you! -Juliet

I learned soooo much from your presentation JT! The biggest thing for me was including images on everything, and just making all of my correspondance, whether it be email or on paper, more visually appealing. I'm never going to miss an opportunity to get my images in front of potential clients again! Thanks JT. :) ~Alyssa - Hybrid Photography

There was SO much (thanks for everything) but the 1st thing that stands out to me... "The customer wants to feel like a superstar." Shannon

Hey JT!!! Your presentation was WONDERFUL! I am going to use all of your great tips for emails and info paks... wow I have a lot to do...lol Take care -Kara

JT, you're awesome. Although it's already been said many times I have to say that getting the images in front of the clients via newsletters, emails, etc, is a simple but great idea. I loved you sharing with us at OSPW. -Ricardo

Kudos for Gerald's speaking

Your style and methodologies was so rewarding…You have opened a new door for me and my clients. It is so cool to have such a giving person to share so freely! ….. Davin H., Dallas, TX

Informality, fun, and very in lighting! Your easy going style (a real person) has given me the confidence to branch out and offer my client base a new experience in realizing the human for is God’s greatest creations …
Cindy L., Haydon, CO.

Down to earth …. A “real practical” seminar. Changed my complete attitude about figure study photography…thanks for a big kick start and it was fun and entertaining……I can’t wait to work on all my images!
Mark M., Steamboat Spgs, CO

Educational ………. Complex made so simple…. Workshop exceeded all of our expectations….Charlie and Kathy P., Orlando, Fl.

Shooting with the best instructors in the business and models who are both beautiful and talented, it’s hard to take a “bad shot”. Every time we go on location we learn so much! Having the opportunity to work in pairs to set the shots was interesting – not working with your partner was a great way to challenge ourselves and open up to another viewpoint. With all of the different set and lighting options, we learned how to more creatively address our clients who chose to have fine art portraits; the more we learn about lighting and posing, the better photographers we become! Rob and Sharon, St Augustine, Fl.

AZPPA Monthly Meeting November 1, 2010

6PM - 6:45 Networking and Speed Mentoring 6:45 Member Spotlight

7 PM - It's 8x10 Print Critique time.
