"Things I Learned From My Mother - A guide to a successful photography business in the digital age."
This funny and emotional program is based upon the life and business lessons that I learned from my mother, Chloe Beeson Blom, M. Photog., Cr. CPP, an innovator in the world of photography and wonderful mother, who died June 19, 2009. We will touch on everything from presentation and customer service to the art of the sale and preserving client relations to being an overall better person. In this age of digital where personal and meaningful contact is lacking, this program will open your eyes to how slowing down and having connecting with your clients and, actually meeting with and spending time with them, will not only translate into bigger sales for you but a personal gratification that will make your life more fulfilled. Don't miss your chance to hear this heartfelt and down to earth program.
Mara Blom Schantz, Cr., owns and operates the successful studio, Artistic Impressions by Mara, Fine Art Photography in Phoenix. She specializes in photographing children and families in black and white. She strives to create images that are emotionally evocative and connect with the viewer. In addition to speaking at both PPA and AZ PPA events she has taught PPA Super Monday seminars as well as her own private seminars. Besides doing photographing and teaching, Mara loves to spend time with her family, practice yoga, surf, run and read. To view more of Mara's work, as well as read more about her, please go to her website at www.artisticimpressionsbymara.com.

KUDOS for JT's speaking abilities
Here are some responses from my JT's presentations. The subject of his presentation next year will be different, but I’m sure it’ll be very educational for the organization. Cheers! JT
From Pictage PartnerCon:
I recently attended your session at the Chicago Partner Con - loved it!! You were one of the best speakers that I heard during those two days. The presentation was very informative and down to earth. Thanks!! - Joy Jensen
Hey man, it was great to meet you at Partnercon last weekend. Your session challenged me the most out of anyones even though it was stuff I'd already been thinking about, it reminded me of some new things and motivated me to get my act together. I appreciate your willingness to share your ideas to help other photographers out. –Jonathan Thrasher
hey jt - i was in chicago last week and loved what you had to say. I got more out your "class" than any of the others. – Julie Morris
I wanted to say thank you for your excellent presentation at PartnerCon in Chicago this past week. It was a pleasure listening to you speak and I not only learned a lot, but I got a lot of ideas from yourself and the other speakers. – Steve Rosenberg
I was impressed like crazy over your contracts and other paper communications for the client. I was inspired to see how you make it personal for the client. I really feel the client will feel ownership. Thank you I really got alot out of your talk. –Lisa Schaller
Thanks for your session and all of your great info in Chicago. I've been doing this for 20 years and feeling a bit stagnate lately, you really helped me see a new way of marketing myself and reaching the type of bride I want to work with. I was very impressed with your attitude and how you jazzed up your presentation materials.
– Scott Patrick
Other Presentations:
JT, Your presentation was amazing. I could have listened to you talk a lot longer and really get into how you create a unique experience for your clients. I especially love the thing about getting the couples to meet before the ceremony and insisting on the make up artist for the bride and bridesmaids. I've also created different signatures for email communications and plan to get a newsletter going in the next couple weeks. I have a ton of untapped potential clients that I need to reach out to and you gave us a really simple approach on how to do that. Can't wait! Thank you! -Juliet
I learned soooo much from your presentation JT! The biggest thing for me was including images on everything, and just making all of my correspondance, whether it be email or on paper, more visually appealing. I'm never going to miss an opportunity to get my images in front of potential clients again! Thanks JT. :) ~Alyssa - Hybrid Photography
There was SO much (thanks for everything) but the 1st thing that stands out to me... "The customer wants to feel like a superstar." Shannon
Hey JT!!! Your presentation was WONDERFUL! I am going to use all of your great tips for emails and info paks... wow I have a lot to do...lol Take care -Kara
JT, you're awesome. Although it's already been said many times I have to say that getting the images in front of the clients via newsletters, emails, etc, is a simple but great idea. I loved you sharing with us at OSPW. -Ricardo

Kudos for Gerald's speaking
Your style and methodologies was so rewarding…You have opened a new door for me and my clients. It is so cool to have such a giving person to share so freely! ….. Davin H., Dallas, TX
Informality, fun, and very in lighting! Your easy going style (a real person) has given me the confidence to branch out and offer my client base a new experience in realizing the human for is God’s greatest creations …
Cindy L., Haydon, CO.
Down to earth …. A “real practical” seminar. Changed my complete attitude about figure study photography…thanks for a big kick start and it was fun and entertaining……I can’t wait to work on all my images!
Mark M., Steamboat Spgs, CO
Educational ………. Complex made so simple…. Workshop exceeded all of our expectations….Charlie and Kathy P., Orlando, Fl.
Shooting with the best instructors in the business and models who are both beautiful and talented, it’s hard to take a “bad shot”. Every time we go on location we learn so much! Having the opportunity to work in pairs to set the shots was interesting – not working with your partner was a great way to challenge ourselves and open up to another viewpoint. With all of the different set and lighting options, we learned how to more creatively address our clients who chose to have fine art portraits; the more we learn about lighting and posing, the better photographers we become! Rob and Sharon, St Augustine, Fl.

7 PM - It's 8x10 Print Critique time. The Semiannual 8x10 Print Critique is open to anyone! AzPPA members can enter for free, $20 entry fee for non-members

Please review the RULES to speed the Check-in process. Areas highlighted in red are specific rules you need to look for.
Download new rules
It's 8x10 Print Competition time. The Semiannual 8x10 Print Critique is open to anyone! AzPPA members can enter for free. There is a $20 entry fee for non-members.
Entries are accepted from 6:00pm to 6:30pm! the evening of the print competition, or by mail at least 48hrs prior to the event.
Send your advance CD entries by mail to:
Jim Walls
AZPPA Print Critique Chair
547 W. Mendoza Ave
Mesa, AZ 85210 Any late entries will be held over for the next competition so as not to delay the start of the critique.
We will have an expert panel of judges that will critique your images, and your images will be projected on the screen for the benefit of the audience.
The main purpose of print critique is to help our members select their best images and give guidance on preparing a print case to enter at our annual state print competition, a PPA Regional, or PPA National Print Competition. As such, some of our rules are a little more relaxed than at a formal competition. Before entering a print into State or National level competitions, be sure the print meets their specific requirements! At the Print Critique, our main goal is to encourage photographers to enter competition and receive the valuable learning experience that is gained by competing. Print critique will help members improve their photography and Photoshop skills, and allow members to earn merits for the AZPPA Distinguished Photographer’s Award.
Prints will be judged under AZPPA State and PPA NAtional lighting conditions ie the light on prints will be f16 at 100 ISO for 1 second. This is similar to viewing prints at high noon under full sun. Your Prints should be printed 15 to 25% darker than you would for a client depending on subject matter.
Qualifications For Print Entry
1. Members of the Arizona Professional Photographers Association may enter the print critique for free. A $20 entry fee is required for non-members.
2. Members must be present at the meeting at which they enter prints, and prints must be entered by deadline time. The ‘must-be-present’ rule is to ensure the critique serves it’s educational purpose primarily, and provide awards as a secondary benefit.
3. Entrants must be present to sign the release at registration to permit AZPPA to display meriting images at this and other events, and to use meriting images in AZPPA promotional material (online and/or in print)
.
3. Entries are accepted from 6:00pm until 6:30pm on the day of the meeting. The 6:30pm cut-off will be enforced even if you are waiting in line to check-in, to ensure the meeting starts on time. Advance registration is therefore strongly encouraged.
4. Entries may be submitted in advance by mailing your CD to the Print Critique Chairperson, for which the cut-off for receipt is 48hrs prior to the meeting (ie. 6pm two days before the critique), but you must still bring your prints to the meeting in person.
Send your advance CD entries by mail to:
Jim Walls
AZPPA Print Critique Chair
547 W. Mendoza Ave
Mesa, AZ 85210
Print Critique Rules
1. Only 8x10” photographs or any sized albums may be entered. Prints can be traditional photographs or inkjet prints, but to be fair to other entrants, no other print size (eg. 8.5x11”) is allowed. Prints do not need to be mounted or sprayed. (This rule is drastically different to PPA's and AzPPA's Annual Print Competition rules.)
2. The prints brought for judging must be clearly marked with the maker’s name and image title on the reverse, along with the category to which they belong. Illegible handwriting or unreadable fonts are common cause for print rejection! All prints may be entered in the same category.
a. Portrait
b. Commercial/Industrial (Tear sheets may be included to assist judges)
c. Illustrative
d. Wedding Photograph
e. Wedding Album (Social Events) - Any size album accepted
3. A digital jpeg file of the image MUST be submitted along with any photograph entered. It must be sized to 800 by 1000 pixels and be in the sRGB color space. If you have an 8x10 file, an easy way to size your image in Photoshop is to go to File>Automate>Fit Image and enter 1000 for both height and width. Please use this format to title your file - Last Name_Title-Of_Print, eg. “WALLS_Sleeping-Beauty.jpg”. No other file formats will be accepted. If possible, also embed your (maker’s) name in the metadata to assist the Print Critique Chairperson.
3a. Your digital files (up to 4) MUST be supplied on a single CD. Flash drives, memory cards, or portable hard-drives are not permitted because they slow down the check-in process.
3a1. Ensure the ONLY files on the CD are your competition entries. The presence of additional files or folders will confuse the loader at check-in.
3a2. Ensure that your CD-R or CD-RW is ‘finalized’ or ‘closed’. Packet-writing CD-burning software (eg Roxio, Nero, Toast) is often proprietary, and CDs written in this incremental fashion, and not properly closed, may not be readable on other machines that do not have the same software.
3b. For albums, a digital jpeg file of ONE page of the album must be submitted with each album entered, and sized to 800 pixels on the shorter side. Please pick your favorite image to be displayed on screen.
4. The maximum number of prints/albums that a member can enter at each meeting for judging is four.
5. All Photographs and albums must be titled. "No title" or "untitled" is not an acceptable title, and will cause your entry to be rejected.
6. A subject may be entered more than once at the Print Critique. For example, if you photograph a family, you can enter any member in that family in another print. Also, a photograph that was contained in wedding album may be entered in the wedding photograph category. This is drastically different from the State, Regional and National print competition rules. Our goal is to help you select the strongest of your images to enter at State, Regional and National competitions.
6. Prints and Albums will be judged on a thumbs up/down method and will need a majority of thumbs up to receive a merit towards the Distinguished Photographer’s Award. See the table below for merit qualification:
2 judges will require 2 thumbs up.
3 judges will require at least 2 thumbs up.
4 judges will require at least 3 thumbs up.
5 judges will require at least 3 thumbs up.
6 judges will require at least 4 thumbs up.
7. The Distinguished Photographer’s Award is an award that was originally created by the Phoenix Professional Photographers Association. If you established your AzPPA membership by April 30, 2006, your local PPPA print merits have been transferred. If you did not renew by April 30, 2006, any past merits from PPPA were forfeited.
8. You must receive 25 “Print Critique Print Merits” to earn the Distinguished Photographer’s Award. There is no monetary value associated with the award.
9. Judges will be Master Photographers, or have received the APPLE Award from the AzPPA, or have completed a national judging class. In the event that a judge doesn't meet any of the three requirements, they will only be selected upon the approval of the Print Critique Chairperson. Judges may choose not to score prints in which they know the maker of the image, if they feel that it may affect their judgment. Judges may not score, challenge or make comments about their own images, a spouse's image or images made by someone that works for the same studio.
9b. If a judge feels unable to judge and score a print for any reason, they may request an alternate judge, or exceptionally, the Print Critique Chairperson, to vote on their behalf.
10. Prints or albums may only be entered once. Even if you make changes to a print/album, they still may not be entered again in our Print Critique. You are encouraged to send the new print/album to State, Regional and National competitions.
11. The AzPPA Print Critique Chairperson has the full authority to answer any questions not specifically covered by these rules. They may also disqualify entries and remove members from the print competition room if any member acts in an unprofessional manner during or after the print competition.
12. If you would like your photographs back after the competition, please collect them at the end as they will not be stored. CDs will not be returned.
13. The judge’s decision will be final.

Program Overview
Our industry has changed so much this past decade. Expensive medium format film cameras that were once the professions’ standard has since been replaced by the digital cameras and the studio touch up artist now are a computer software program.
Such is life, adapt or go the way of the dinosaur. We recognized the need to changing winds early and embraced the new technology.
However, as professionals, we believe it is extremely important to maintain the standards of photographic excellence that separates us from those who are not. The difference being in that we understand what separates a good image from one that is not.
This program will provide you with information and techniques to recognize what an acceptable image is and improve the final presentation of the product for the client through appropriate enhancement techniques.

A little about Brian Watt:
I am the youngest in the nation to have received the degrees of Certified Professional Photographer and Master of Photography. I have had work in international traveling exhibitions and have won numerous Kodak gallery and Fuji Masterpiece awards.
My start in photography began when my father bought into a photography business 16 years ago. I grew up in the business and at the age of 12 was recognized as one of the top ten non-masters in the state of Nebraska. I have been serious about photography ever since.
The last couple years, Arizona’s state photography association has recognized me as one of their top ten photographers.

The Art of Life
Pete Wright - M.Photog., Cr. FP
pwphotography.com
Pregnancy and the birth of a child are special times for a woman and her family and it has become a trend to have maternity and baby portraits taken capturing these experiences. Pete Wright of PW Photography has seen maternity and infant sessions in his studio grow exponentially over recent years, in large part due to strategic marketing
reaching his target clients, assuring moms they will look their best and helping them feel at ease. He also attributes the growth to dynamic images and predictable results from every portrait session.
Pete's studio began focusing their attention to this market upon the realization that doing so would help create loyal life long clients that they could photograph as their families grew. Join Pete as he walks you through the crucial steps his studio has taken to boost their maternity and infant clientele and then stick around for a live session where he will cover the basics that give him the foundation for each session and create some of his "WOW" images.
As a fourth-generation artist and a second generation photographer, Pete Wright was raised in North Carolina in an environment rich in art and photography. His photographs were first published when he was 14 years old when he accepted his first paying job as a photographer working for a regional newspaper. Years later, in 1997 PW Photography's first studio opened in Greenville, North Carolina. The following year the company moved to Richmond, Virginia. The studio's work has ranged from portraits and weddings to sports and editorials.
During his 23 years of working as a photographer Pete has earned the distinction of Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman from PPA. He also received Photographer of the Year honors from PPA in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, has been awarded Fuji and Kodak Gallery Awards, was accepted into the PPA Loan Collection several times, has been featured in several national publications and is fortunate to have lectured around the world about his passion for photography. He loves to teach and inspire others to follow or find their passion in photography and use that passion to build a successful business!

Jeff started his career in photography at the young age as a second generation photographer shooting for his mothers business. At 15 he photographed his first wedding, and continued photographing weddings for the next twenty years. The Secrets to Illustrative Portraits
Woody Walters - M.Photog.
woodywalters.com
Join master craftsman photographer Woody Walters as he shares his unique vision into montage imaging and how he utilizes this technique in portraits. Walters will demonstrate his distinctive masking abilities while he shows you how to incorporate multiple images to capture and illustrate your clients’ passions and lifestyle. Using custom backgrounds created by Woody, these montages come together in minutes and offer your clients endless possibilities. Learn the special blending techniques that will turn your images into art. If you’ve seen Woody before, be prepared for an all new program, with new images and new techniques to take your illustrations to the next level.
He has won “Heart of America Top Photographer” as well as “Top Iowa Photographer,” in the last five H.O.A competitions. With seven Kodak Gallery Awards and 14 loan collection prints, he earned his Master and Craftsman degree in just four entries. He was awarded the Imaging Excellence award from PPA in 2004 and received two perfect scores in print competition for his images “My Ex Wife” and “Born in the USA.” His unique vision, light hearted delivery style, and photographic knowledge have made Woody Walters one of the foremost speakers in electronic imaging.
Woody Walters has become one of the nation’s premier artists. Walters’ photographs are a celebration of renewal and change. In his latest portfolio “Reflections of Christ,” Walters has pushed the boundary of photography to new and exciting limits allowing him to give a visual testimony in strikingly complex imagery. During a career that spans decades, Walters evolved from a commercial photographer and fine art black and white landscapes artist, to one of the newest Christian artists. His client list included Walt Disney World, Blockbuster Video, Ilford Photo, Mamiya Camera, Calumet, and Burger King.
His black and white landscapes are reminiscent of Ansel Adams and depict the beauty of nature’s diversity. The portfolio ”Faces In Time” takes the viewer back to an age of Americana that is forever lost. One of the images from that portfolio, “Lill”, was purchased for donation to the Smithsonian. In 1994 his distinctive photographs of Florida were published by the University of Florida Press in a book entitled, “Visions of Florida.”
The reason for the inspiration for “Reflections of Christ” came from a very spiritual place within his heart. “After viewing the many negative portrayals of Christ that are found in art today, I felt compelled to take a positive approach to the depiction of Christ. With the experiments in combined imagery this work is now a reality.”
Through his diverse portfolio subjects, Walters’s work is sought after and appeals to a very wide audience. Walters’ works appear in museums and galleries throughout the world, including Ansel Adams private collection, the Smithsonian, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Yergeau-Musee International d’Art in Canada, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Hoyt Institute of Art, the Pensacola Museum, the Madison Museum of Art, a private collection at the Vatican in Rome, and is featured in many international tours with the United States Embassy.
Walters has been in the top five photographer’s in Iowa seven times. He has also received the Top Heart of America Photographer five times, a record in the state of Iowa. He received his Masters and Craftsman Degrees from PPA in July 2003. Sixteen images were chosen for the prestigious loan collection and he received the coveted Medlar Award for the top portrait at the April 2000 affiliated competition. In 2005 he received the Imaging Excellence Award from Professional Photographers of America. To date Walters has collected an astounding eight Kodak Gallery Awards and two Fuji Masterpiece Awards. He is one of the only photographers to receive two perfect scores in print competition for his images “My Ex Wife” and “Born in the USA.”
Walters contributes to many business and industry magazines on a regular basis and is in demand on the lecture circuit. He teaches across the country offering photographic workshops for beginners to the very advanced and his self published instructional DVDs “Inside Woody’s World” has been highly regarded by professionals.
When he is not teaching he is doing what he loves most, creating images and working with his wife Ninya in their portrait studio business in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Thanks again.” Lisa Figgins
“Your wedding work and your marketing are by far the best I have ever seen. I have never been able to sit through any 3 hour program before in my life.

AZPPA All Day Spring Fling -High School Seniors My Way - Jim Lersch Sunday May 1, 2011
High School Seniors My Way
Jim Lersch M.Photog., Cr., API, PPO-F
www.lerschphoto.com
You may have seen Jim's seniors images in competition....a little out there, huh? Do you go to the studio every morning dreading yet another day of seniors? Remember how much fun photography used to be when you first started creating beautiful images? Jim will show you how to adapt your lighting techniques (with a commercial edge) to create extremely creative senior images. Jim will also demonstrate how his theory of spending one-on-one time with the students and his unusual techniques have provided him with a leading edge that is creating demand for his high school portraiture. This segment includes a few set photos so you can see how easy it is and is also narrated by the actual seniors that Jim has photographed - they'll tell you what seniors think and what YOU need to think about. Jim will give you a list of the questions that he asks his seniors to "get into their minds" and talk about how color plays a key role in finding out who they really are. Let's face it, Jim's just a commercial guy who's trying seniors for fun BUT when a commercial shooter is stealing business away from portrait studios, you need see how and why.
Jim Lersch has been a commercial photographer for 37 years. During that time he has seen his share of slow seasons. Jim has learned to compensate for those times by adapting and searching for new ways to keep his business moving forward. He has worked with many famous celebrities in Branson, Missouri including Andy Williams, Ann-Margaret and Yakov Smirnoff to name just a few. His high-end commercial and portrait imagery has earned him 6 Kodak Gallery Awards, 4 Fujifilm Masterpiece Awards and the Photographer of the Year Award from the PP of the Ozarks in both 2003 and 2004. Jim was the first commercial photographer ever to receive this honor. Jim holds both the PPA Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees, his teaching credits include instructing at PPA’s Winona School of Photography for several years, he’s a PPA Approved Photographic Instructor and Jim has lectured for over 25 years.

In addition, Jim will demonstrate how his commercial techniques have provided him with a leading edge that has created high demand for his senior portraiture and entertainment industry photography. His program will give you the technical knowledge and inspiration you need to succeed in another aspect of the industry or simply enhance the business segment that you are already in.

The Boutique Studio for Private Schools
Britney Kirby Fullgraf
Britney Kirby Fullgraf has only been a professional photographer since 2007, but has already made an impact on the industry. Her unique business model has attracted the attention of photographers across the country. Britney credits many PPA mentors for her success and says she has been overwhelmed by help, support and encouragement.
In February 2009, she began teaching The Boutique Studio for Private Schools. Britney's high end approach to private schools teaches photographers to steer pre-qualified clients to their regular, private studios. Her workshops have enabled a number of photographers to secure their own schools...two of whom now photograph an entire franchise of private schools.. Britney has hosted a number of photographers in Central Florida, as they have studied and observed her actual school shoots and other operations.
Britney received the 2009 Distinguished award for the Professional Photographer's Guild of Mid-Florida, based on print competition. "After attending Britney’s two day shoot and consultation, I have found her techniques, tips and process exceptionally helpful. I just recently completed my first school shoot and it was clear that I made the right decision. I would have been completely overwhelmed without her consultation and knowledge. Through Britney, I know there will be a higher expectation of school portraits in the future and I am very thankful that I will be a part of that. Thank you very much for sharing your experience and expertise. Britney....I cannot thank you enough!" Phyllis Kuykendall , Phyllis Kuykendall Photography ~ Keller, Texas
